Read to Succeed
Research tells us that reading for pleasure has countless advantages to young people. Those who read more regularly generally do better at school. They have a wider vocabulary and feel more confident to use this new vocabulary in their everyday spoken and written language. Not only this, but reading is proven to calm down our nervous system, make us feel more relaxed and can allow us to learn and experience lives, lands and characters that we may not be able to experience in reality.
At Walton, our Read to Succeed scheme is designed to encourage our students to read for pleasure by challenging them to read 12 texts over the course of an academic year; 6 fiction texts and 6 non-fiction texts. The non-fiction texts on this we page have been selected by our expert subject teachers to support and challenge a student’s curriculum learning.
When a student completes the reading of a text, they should speak to their subject teacher (for completion of a non-fiction text) or their tutor (for a fiction text) who will log this on Class Charts. At the end of the academic year, those students who have completed the full Read to Succeed challenge will be rewarded for their efforts.
