All teachers are teachers of special educational needs. 

At Walton High School, we recognise that it is everyone’s responsibility to meet the needs of all students. However, despite the high quality teaching some students do not make progress in line with their peers, academically or socially and emotionally. These students might be identified as having special educational needs.

What is Special Education Needs?

A child or young person has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age. Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for others of the same age in a mainstream setting in England…. Health care provision or social care provision which educates or trains a child or young person is to be treated as special educational provision.

Some students require additional provision, this could be within the classroom. one to one or small group support. At Walton High School, we believe in inclusive education and we try, wherever possible for all students to learn within the classroom following a broad and balanced curriculum.   Each student identified as having SEND needs, is assigned a keyworker (TA) who they can meet with regularly and share any concerns.  The students also have a student passport, which outlines strengths, difficulties and appropriate strategies to support their learning, which is shared with all of their teachers.   Students are able to access student support during lunch and breaktime if they require a quieter place to work.

The work of the SEND Department is overseen by the SENCo, together with an experienced team of Teaching Assistants. We are also supported by a number of external agencies that include the Autism Inclusion Team (AIT), the visual impairment service, the hearing impairment service, Occupational Therapists, Educational Psychology Service and Local Authority SEND specialists
